… we’re not involved – Mgt
The Auditor General, National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS), Usman Mustapha was reportedly beaten by security men of the University of Ilorin, last Thursday.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Pilot Education at the weekend, The President of NAKSS, Comrade Musa Mohammed Mancha said, “The incident occurred during the ongoing bursary disbursement at the University of Ilorin (permanent site) on Thursday.
“I led the national executives for the usual monitoring and supervision of the disbursement exercise and the Dean and Sub Dean of Students Affairs of the university alongside the support of the scholarship board denied our team entrance, so we ended up forcing our way inside and we out rightly stopped the disbursement process.
“While trying to analyse issues, the Dean and Sub Dean ordered the security officials to beat one of the NAKSS executives until he fainted with injuries. We had to rush him to the Kwara State Civil Service Clinic at GRA, Ilorin, for treatment.”
Mancha however apologised to all NAKSS members from the University of Ilorin, saying the executives of NAKSS had no choice than to halt the disbursement till further notice.
“We had to fight for our right. We hereby appeal to all NAKSSITES to be calm and not take laws into their hands while we file the case through lawful means,” he said.
The President however announced the ban of the University of Ilorin chapter of NAKSS till further notice, saying violation of the order will lead to arrest of the chapter executives and total cancellation of the chapter.
“We call on the security agency to investigate the incident thoroughly because we were carrying out our responsibility and wanted to address students of the situation on ground,” he added,
When our reporter contacted the Head of Corporate Affairs, University if Ilorin, Mr. Kunle Akogun, he simply said, “We are not involved in the students’ bursary issue.”
Also, efforts to get the response of the Chairperson, Kwara State Scholarship Board, Barr. Fatimah Yusuf proved abortive as she did not respond to her calls and response to the text message sent to her was still being waited as at the time of filing this report.
