A twenty-seven-year-old student, Olaiya Wasiu, was on Tuesday, remanded in prison custody by a magistrate court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State over alleged robbery.
The Police First Information (FIR) revealed that Wasiu broke into the hostel of Oladunjoye Olamide and Akinkuotu JolaJesu at Al-Hikmah University with knife and robbed them of their phones.
Police report stated that the defendant robbed the two students of one Techno phone valued at N65,000 and a Samsung phone valued at N30,000.
The FIR further added that the accused person locked the complainants in a room and demanded N2million from their parents as ransom.
The Police report stressed that the accused threatened the complainants’ parents on phone that if they don’t pay the sum of N2million, he will kill their children.
The parents reportedly contacted the police at Adewole Division who swung into action and got the Wasiu arrested.
He was dragged before Magistrate Abdulraheem Bello for criminal conspiracy and armed robbery contrary to sections 6(b) &1 (2) of Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act Cap R11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
The prosecutor, Folorunsho Zacheous, while addressing the court asked the accused person should be remanded in prison custody.
Barr. Muhammed Toyin Onanolapo, however, urged the court to discountenance the submission of the prosecutor.
He said his client is still presumed innocent until contrarily proved otherwise arguing that he should still be allowed to enjoy his fundamental human right.
Magistrate Bello in his ruling, ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody while the matter was adjourned to 23rd May, 2019.
