Kwara Assembly inaugurates Service Commission

Members of the new Kwara State House of Assembly Service Commission have been charged to be fair and live up to expectation in the discharge of their statutory functions.
The Speaker Dr. Ali Ahmad, gave the charge in Ilorin while inaugurating the commission.
Ahmad explained that as handlers of matter relating to recruitment, promotion and discipline of Civil Servants, the commission should justify the confidence reposed in them.
The Speaker who described the inauguration as the climax of long period of struggle for the total independence of the legislature in accordance with the principle of Separation of Power, added that the feat was achieved recently during the last 4th Alteration to the 1999 constitution.
He said their appointments were based on their rich pedigree in the public service in which they had at different times proven themselves as individuals with high moral rectitude and integrity.
Responding, the chairman of the State House of Assembly Service Commission, Hon. Abdul-Azeez Babatunde Mohammed, assured that members would lay a solid foundation by performing their statutory functions diligently and effectively.
Hon Mohammed, who is a former Speaker of the House, while promising to work with career officers in ensuring cordial working relationship between outgoing, incoming legislators and staff to sustain the vibrancy of the House, praised the Speaker,ย  Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed and the Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki for achieving the herculean task.
Earlier, the Clerk of the House, Hajia Halimat Jummai Kperogi, had recalled with nostalgia that the State House of Assembly had emerged as one of the first few states with legislative Commission, which according to her, had become autonomous in the performance of its statutory function of providing platform for good governance in the state.
She praised the Speaker and other outgoing members of the 8th legislature, for their resilience in achieving autonomy for state legislature in the country.
It would be recalled that the House, had on Tuesday, 7th May 2019 confirmed the appointments of Hon Abdul Azeez Babatunde Mohammed, Hon Nimota Aduke Ibrahim, Alhaji Atolagbe Suleiman Alege, Mr. Alex Kehinde Bankole and Alhaji Hassan Mahmud Babako as Chairman and members of the state House of Assembly Service Commission respectively.


โ€ฆconfirms Eleja KWSIEC chair

The Kwara State House of Assembly on Thursday finally confirmed the proposed chairman of the state Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) Alhaji Taiye Banu Eleja.
It would be recalled that the lawmakers had on Wednesday stood down his confirmation due to his non appearance at the Floor of the House.
Asked why he was absent during the first screening, Eleje said the discrepancy in the announcement of his name made him stay back as he was not sure he was the one being nominated.
“Hon Speaker, I did not appear for the first screening because the name that was nominated and announced was Barrister Taiye Eleja and that is not my name. So to avoid any issue that may arise from such situation, I had to stay off the screening exercise. That was what happened Mr Speaker”, he added.
Most members at the floor described his nomination as round peg in a round hole in both character and requisite experience and urged the House to confirm his nomination.
The particularly praised his decision to maintain his integrity rather than rushing to be screened as many in his shoe would do that despite the implication of such development.
Meanwhile, the Kwara United Football Management Bill 2019 has been passed into law by the State House of Assembly.
Under the law, the darling club now has separate management corporation and board to ensure effective management of the affairs of the football club.
The law equally established a board consisting of chairman and other members with a tenure of 4 years and can be renewed by the State Governor.
It also provides means through which the football club could be funded as it hitherto relied on executive approval for its funding.
This according to the law can be through budgeting allocation and partnership with sporting agencies and marketers.
The chairman of the Board must now be a seasoned footballer, while the Executive Secretary must be from the State Ministry of Youths and Sports.
The Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmad while speaking, said the Bill was long overdue and expressed confidence, that with the passage of the bill, the state darling club would have improved performance in the nation’s premier league.
