The Kwara State Government has charged youths to shun drugs abuse and other criminal activities.
The Head of Service, Mrs. Susan Modupe Olawole who represented the immediate past Governor of the state, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed made the disclosure during the Children’s Day celebration held at Metropolitan Square, Ilorin on Monday.
The Governor said, ” May I inform you that the choice of the theme for this year; ‘Drug abuse among children: Addressing the challenges’ was deliberate in view of the disturbing reports that drugs abuse has become a major public health and security concern in Nigeria.
“It is indeed worrisome to note that some of our children at all levels of education attainment are known to engage in this unwholesome practice which is considered a medical disease. Some of these children now experience mental health challenges, temporary or permanent absence and eventually become school dropouts.
“Other consequences include increased violence and crimes, HIV/AIDS, rape, secret cult activities amongst others. These effects also impact negatively on our healthcare delivery system, socio economic indices and general well-being of our citizens.
According to the Governor this administration is very concerned about the impact of drugs and substance abuse adding that government and parents will synergise to build a better future for the children as leaders of tomorrow.
“As the immediate agent of socialization, we specifically call on parents to monitor the activities of their children by spending time with them. Parents should ensure that their children keep good company to avoid negative peer pressure.
“I call on the children to stay away from abusive and addictive substances and concentrate on your studies as this administration will ensure a conducive learning environment for you to develop your potentials.”
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Alhaji Abdulganiyu Opeloyeru stressed that the ministry will continue to partner with other government agencies and international organisations to ensure that the future of the children is not derailed.
