After missing May salary, hope for June pay dims for Kwara ‘sunset’ workers
By Mumini AbdulKareem
Kwara State workers appointed towards the twilight of the last
administration may not be captured in the payment voucher for June
salary as the state government has insisted the need to conclude
discreet investigation on the matter before any payment can be made to
the affected workers.
‘Sunset’ workers, as the affected workers are known, were engaged by
the administration of immediate past Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed but
were reportedly excluded from payment of May salary by his successor,
Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq over alleged political motive in their
employment.
But some officials of the last government have denied any political
drive in their appointment arguing that the new appointees were to
serve as replacement for retiring officials.
The matter has top discussion in the state as the month of June winds
down with supporters and officials of the previous and present
government throwing brickbat at one another over the issue.
According to the Governor who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary,
Rafiu Ajakaye, the public would be briefed as soon as investigation
into the matter is concluded.
Asked what will be the plan of the government on the affected workers
who failed to receive salary last month and whether they will be
captured in the payment of June salary, disengage or absorbed, Ajakaye
declined to either confirm or deny any of the queries adding that the
public would be briefed on the outcome of the investigation.
“His Excellency, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has ordered discreet
investigation into the issue and the public will be briefed (as soon
as possible) once the investigation has been concluded”.
There have been a ‘Save Our Soul’ (SOS) report flying around in online
medium and many social media platforms under the guise of “concerned
citizens” believe to be the handiwork of the affected workers pleading
with the governor to consider them for payment as they were among
those that voted for him during the last general elections.
The online report further lamented the plight of the affected workers
and their precarious situation since the government has stopped
payment of their salary.
