There was mild drama yesterday at the Kwara State family court as a septuagenarian; Oseni Lawal who impregnated his 13 year-old niece (name withheld) insisted against all appeals that he must marry the teenager.
The old man was said to have been having carnal knowledge of the teen in his house since 2018 outside the conscience of the nominal complainant.
In the First Information Report (FIR) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) Kwara State Command, the matter was reported at the headquarters of the force, on 20th July, 2019 by one Saliu Garba, the nominal complainant.
The suspect was said to have committed an offence of procreation of minor girl, rape, gross indecency, contrary to sections 275, 282, and 285 of the penal code and punishable under section 275, 283 and 285 of the penal code law of Nigeria.
According to the investigation department of the NSCDC, the parents of the victim got to know of the development after their daughter became pregnant for the suspect.
The mother was said to have immediately raised the alarm prompting her daughter to reveal who is responsible for the pregnancy.
NSCDC complaint sheet further added that the girl confessed that the suspect is responsible for the act a development that led to the arrest of Lawal.
Further investigation through medical examination carried out by Mobilus Diagnostic Centres, Ilorin revealed that the girl was indeed defiled.
The matter however came up for mention before Magistrate Shade Lawal of the family court yesterday and the suspect was subsequently remanded in prison custody while the matter was adjourned to 14th August, 2019.
Earlier, the counsel representing the NSCDC, Ajide Peter Kehinde, prayed the court for remand of the suspect.
Magistrate Lawal, said in the next adjourned date, the service of the state legal aide would be secured for the suspect to ensure fair hearing.
