…as board calls for patience
By Mumini AbdulKareem
The suspension and subsequent transfer of some Director of Personnel (DPMs) and treasurers across the sixteen Local Government councils of Kwara State have began to take its toll on activities at the third tier of government, National Pilot has learnt.
Following decision of the state government to replace the DPMs and financial officers of the Local Governments who worked with the last administration in line with the recommendation of the House of Assembly, there were pleas from high quarters in the state that some of the affected officers should be left to complete their tenures ranging from one to two months.
Although, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq initially failed to act on the resolution of the lawmakers, he however wielded the big stick when some of the DPMs were reportedly sacked (replaced) and new officials posted to replace them.
However, the development has stalled payment of the July salaries for the affected teachers.
An official of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) who confided in this reporter on the issue, confirmed the development, but said the affected workers will hopefully receive their pay before the Id-el-Kabir cerebration, adding that everything is being done to address the hitch that the development had caused.
“They are still working on the issue of regularisation and working seriously on the problem and once they are through with it, payment will commence. This we hope will begin before the Sallah celebration”, the source added.
SUBEB has, however, called for patience over the salary delay of junior secondary school workers, adding that the issue is being addressed.
A statement signed by the Press Secretary of SUBEB, Mrs. Olufunke Olorunnisola on Wednesday, expressed regret over the delay and attributed it to two major issues.
“The delay is in two folds. The first is the recent change of the Directors of Personnel Management and treasurers of various Local Government areas. The change meant that there would be a change in the signatories to the accounts of the local government areas from which payment for primary and junior secondary teachers come from. This has just been resolved.
“The second is the need to fully comply with the National Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) directives on Local Government autonomy. We regret this delay and call for patience by everyone concerned as the issues are being addressed by the government with a view to finding immediate solutions to them”, he added.
