Ex-convict, other, in prison custody over alleged theft

An ex-convict, Wasiu Muhammed and a 25 years old Akeem Useni, were yesterday remanded in Federal prison yard, Ilorin over alleged theft.
They were said to have allegedly stolen a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number: No: Ogun PKA 131 VY.
They were dragged before Magistrate Yahaya Rashidat for criminal conspiracy and theft contrary to sections 97 and 287 Of the penal code law.
The suspects were arrested at Geri Alimi in Ilorin by Sgt Gilbert Abaji and his team during a stop and search operation.
The Police First Information report noted that when the suspects were stop and questioned about the authentic ownership of the motorcycle, they could not give satisfactory explanation to the police.
In lieu of this, the two suspects were arrested and taken to the police station for further investigation.
During interrogation at the SARS office, Ilorin, the suspects were said to have confessed to the crime and other similar crimes.
The Police report also revealed that the suspects are hoodlums, members, gang of thieves that rob citizens motorcycles.
The prosecutor, Inspt Matthew Ologbansaye prayed the court to remand the suspects in prison custody pending the determination of police investigation.
He noted that if the suspects were given bail, the action may jeopardise police investigation, adding that they may equally jump bail.
The suspects’ counsel, Sulyman Abdullah urged the court to discountenance the submission of the prosecutor on the basis that his clients are still presumed innocent of the offences levelled against them.
He said the suspects should still be allowed to enjoy their fundamental human rights since they’ve not been found guilty of the alleged offences.
The Magistrate, Mrs Rashidat, in her ruling ordered the remand of the suspects in Federal prison while the matter was adjourned to 29th August, 2019.
Giving reason for the remand, the magistrate stressed that there is no residential address on the police report, saying the suspects will be hard to trace if they eventually violate the bail privilege.
