An unidentified man was yesterday set ablaze by angry mob at Unity road, Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, over alleged motorcycle theft.
The incident was said to have occurred around 12pm at the frontage of Access Bank.
According to an eye witness account, the suspect was said to have met his waterloo as commercial motorcyclists caught up with him and apprehended him as he was about escaping with the stolen motorcycle.
The angry mob after beating the suspect thereafter set him ablaze.
An eyewitness who simply identified himself as Kadri said, “I was driving past Unity road when I saw the crowd dominated by okada riders. When I tried to find out what happened, I was told someone stole a motorcycle. They (the mob) instantly set him ablaze probably to prevent the suspect from escaping justice,” he divulged.
Similarly, a Facebook user; Abdulqudir Abdulhakim while trying to call the attention of policemen to the incident posted on his timeline, yesterday, “angry mob reportedly, burnt a suspected motorcycle thief to death in front of Access bank, Unity area, in Ilorin couple of minutes ago. We are calling nigeria@policeNG & NSCDC to arrest all the culprits and bring justice.”
Meanwhile, it was gathered that policemen from ‘A Division’ rushed down to the scene of the incident to salvage the situation. This medium however could not confirm whether any arrest was made by the security agents.
However when contacted, last night, the Kwara State police spokesperson, DSP, Ajayi Okasanmi said he has not been brief on the matter.
