A health technician, Mrs. Itunu Olaosebikan has urged nursing mothers
to observe the two years exclusive breastfeeding for healthy living of
mothers and babies.
She made the disclosure during a seminar organised by the Nigeria
Association Of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Kwara Chapter, titled;
“Importance of Breastfeeding to Mother and Child” as part of
activities to mark World Breastfeeding Week in Ilorin, last Thursday.
She noted that exclusive breastfeeding benefits both mother and child
and also protects the baby against diseases.
Olaosebikan advised mothers to maintain proper hygiene before
breastfeeding to avoid any form of contamination.
She added that exclusive breastfeeding could prevent pregnancy to some extent.
Similarly, another resource person, Mrs. Halima Atanda, in her lecture
warned against consumption of preserved meals.
She, therefore, urged Nigerians to consume less carbohydrate, take a
lot of water, and eat more fruits and vegetables for healthy living.
On her part, another speaker, Mrs. Joy Bolarin called on women
journalists to embrace entrepreneurship in order to reduce their
financial burden.
The Chairperson NAWOJ Kwara, Mrs. Ayobola Olupinla, who appreciated
the large turnout corroborated the speakers saying nursing mothers
must devote at least two years to breastfeeding of their child.
