The immediate past principal of Queen Elizabeth Junior Secondary School, Ilorin, Kwara State, Mrs. Monsurat Ogunwale has attributed the falling standard of education to decline in moral values in the society.
She stated this on Saturday during a retirement thanksgiving feast held in her honour at the Queens Hall of the school.
According to her, “there is no moral value system again in the society like before, and this has constituted a bane to the development of education in Nigeria. When I joined Educational Management Board in 1986, the standard and commitments of teachers to their job was high.
She added that teachers are no more dedicated to their job. They see teaching job as a stepping stone. Just to manage it and they keep managing the system.
Ogunwale further blamed parents, the government and students for the anomalies in the education sector.
She lamented that some parents pamper their wards and go against teachers who discipline their wards.
“Some parents these days, if you discipline their children for wrong doing, they come back to the school the following day for confrontation with the teacher. It is as bad as that,” she lamented.
The ex-principal described her 35 years in service as a memorable following her aspiration to become a teacher from childhood.
Also speaking at the event, the principal of the senior section of the college, Alhaja Ramat Abdulraman, described her out gone colleague as a dedicated teacher.
“I feel elated today. We have known each other for about 15 years now and she discharged her duties excellently. I wish her a successful retirement.”
Also, the son of the celebrant, Ahmad Ogunwale described his mother as a disciplinarian.
“She cannot be tired. We’ll take care of her. We thank God for her life and a well spent service years”, he said.
