Kwara Poly student dies mysteriously after spiritual bath

A student of Kwara State Polytechnic was on Tuesday found dead after allegedly having a spiritual bath.

The incident according to sources who were privy of the situation occurred in Ara, one of the villages that surrounds the institution.

Until his death, the victim, Owotoke Atanda, it was gathered, was an HND II student of Accounting Department and the Course Rep of the class.

National Pilot learnt that the deceased took an Okada to a nearby stream in Ara to have what sources described as a spiritual bath but let out a loud cry in the process.

It was the hired Okada rider who took him to the place that rushed to the scene but met his lifeless body naked’ behind a small calabash containing some native soap, another source added.

Although his death is still shrouded in mystery, he was reportedly alleged of being a Yahoo boy who died in the process of some carrying out ritual prescription.

The incident occurred in the afternoon around 4pm.

Narrating the occurrence further, a source said “When he got there, he told the Okada man to wait and went to the stream to have the birth. But he left out a loud cry afterwards which attracted the Okada rider that was waiting for him.

“He was found naked behind his small calabash containing some native soap with the clothes he wore behind him. It was the Okada rider that notified the villagers who rushed to the scene. They later wore him his clothes and notified the school authorities”.

It was learnt that his corpse has been taken away by his parents after initial resistance from the villagers over issue of writs because of the circumstances surrounding his death.

But the PRO of Kwara Polytechnic, Alhaji Yunus AbdulKadir who confirmed the incident in a telephone chat with this medium last night denied that the late student was a yahoo boy.

According to him, “He was the class rep but I don’t think he is a Yahoo boy. He was sick and in an attempt to seek solution, was told to bath with native sponge. It was after he finished the bath that he slumped and the Okada rider who took him to the place called the attention of the people.

“He has been sick and away from school for some time. It was in the process of looking for cure that he directed to take a spiritual bath. That was what happened”, he added.
