A Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Isaac Kayode Adegun has called on the federal government to immediately ban engineering products being produced locally in the country.
This is just as he asked the federal government to declare a state of emergency on engineering research and development.
Professor Adegun stated this while delivering the One hundred and ninety third inaugural lecture of the University of Ilorin titled ” God the creator, Man the Manipulator: The journey so far in Engineering Manipulation of Fluids and Geometries for Human life.
He said government should compel Nigerians to patronize the country’s locally made engineering products to grow the industrial sector and the country’s economy adding that importation of tiles, upholstery and other vehicular components parts should be discouraged.
He said it was shameful that the country is still importing products that can be produced locally adding that local manufacturing companies should be established to produce them.
Professor Adegun who is currently developing a biomass based steam turbine engine for Nigerian use as a renewable energy source to generate electricity, called on the federal government to arrest the energy crises by investing in bio gas.
“For effective performance of students and teachers, lecture rooms should be Air-Conditioned.
“Since there is no gain without pain, as the federal government did for rice by stopping its importation into the country, the federal government should also identify some engineering products being produced locally whose importation should be summarily stopped.
“For example, importation of tiles, upholsteries and even some vehicular component parts should stop; go to Aba and see wonders.
“We must be compelled to patronize the local engineering products,” he said.
