Clampdown: NDLEA arrest 280 in Kwara for hard drug

Kwara State Command of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested no fewer than 280 suspects in 7 months for being in possession of hard drugs.
In an interview with our reporter, the state Commander of the NDLEA, Ambrose Umar in his office, disclosed that out of the total number arrested, 233 were males and 57 female.
“Out of the 280 suspects, 77 were counselled and released to their various families, 12 were admitted for long term counseling because we need to assist them to get out of the addiction.
He added that about 4,339.8kilogram of assorted hard drugs were seized from the suspect following their arrest.
“4039.6kg were Marijuana popularly known as ‘igbo’ while 300 kg were tramadol and codeine among others.
“Between January to July, the Command recorded 9 conviction, 12 cases have been taken to court of law while others are undergoing investigation.”
He lamented that inspite of total lockdown as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, illegal drug retailers still carried out their activities.
“During COVID-19 lockdown, we received report from communities such as Ganmo, Pakata, Okolowo among others that suspects were smoking hard drugs freely and disturbing people in the neigbourhood.
“The Command swung into action and some boys were arrested but due to covid-19 we couldn’t lock them up they were counselled and released to their parents as they are just drug users.”
