The Kwara State governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, last night was heavily condemned by Kwarans for asking his cabinet members to come up with ideas on how to tackle unemployment in the state after over 15 months of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration in the state.
The governor, who spoke during a virtual cabinet meeting on Thursday called on state executive council members to brainstorm on job creation strategies.
“One of our biggest challenges as a country is youth unemployment. Regardless of what we are currently doing especially with regards to our recent moves in that direction, I am charging you to come up with innovative ideas about how to create more jobs in our various constituencies,” the governor said.
But former Special Adviser on Students Affairs and Labour Matters to Kwara State Government, Comrade Bisi Fakayode and former House of Representatives member, Hon Abraham Ashaolu among other Kwaran condemned the governor for the action adding that is shows lack of preparedness.
According to Fakayode, It’s unfortunate to have Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq at the helms of affairs in Kwara and like some of us that knew him from afar, we know quite well that it’s only God that can save the ship of the state from crash landing.
“He has no manifesto either by himself or implementing the party’s own. Also, he has no programmes at all for all the segments you may think of in the state, either for the youth or the state in general. He is about fifteen months in government and has got no programmes whatsoever for the youth.
“When you talk about the workers, the minimum which was one of the cardinal campaign organs used against the previous government is not provided for in the budget and the sadden thing is that when the budget was reviewed, there was no consideration for the provision of the minimum wage which by implication means Kwara workers have no hope of receiving anything like minimum wage in the life of this administration”, he noted.
He said “we gathered from good and credible sources in government that there is now a kind of embargo on promotion for now and that is sad for workers who have been agitating for promotion.
“And to now compound the plight of workers, this government is even retrenching workers who are mostly youth they refused to find employment for.
“This administration lacks bearing and focus and its only God that can avert the ship of Kwara State from heating the rocks”, he submitted.
On his part, Ashaolu said “In the first place, you suppose to have come to power with a manifesto. For him (Governor) now to be asking for ideas on what to do means they were not prepared and if at all they have, it means they have jettisoned it and going for a new one.
“The fact that the government hardly meet at executive level means not much is on the front burner for many sectors and almost giving people the impression that they are trying to take off more than one year after inauguration. This development is like a diversionary method to give people the impression that something is going on”, he said.
Meanwhile, in a report by an online medium, Insider leading opposition members in the state said the fact that the governor was just calling for ideas on how to create jobs in the second year of his tenure meant that he never had plans of how to tackle the problems confronting the state, of which youth unemployment is one.
“How can a governor worth the name be calling for ideas on how to create jobs after 15 months in office? What then is the content of his manifesto, especially in the area of youth empowerment?” the paper quoted Nurudeen Abdulkarim, a member of PDP
Similarly, it reported that a youth development advocate in the state, Jide Charles said the fact that the governor is almost at a lost on how to create jobs for youths justify the conclusion that he has effectively surrounded himself with people who can barely help him to deliver on his vision for the state.
“Tell me, which commissioner requires the prodding of his boss to think? How many youth empowerment ideas has the rookie he put in charge of the youth ministry come up with? Even now that he’s begging them to come up with ideas, many of them won’t still know what to give him. It’s not their fault though, since you can’t give what you don’t have,” Charles noted according to the paper.
