Nat’l Sports Festival: Kwara Athletes protest unpaid allowances, threatens to boycott event

Kwara athletes on Friday protested against the non payments of their camp allowances by the state Ministry of Sports and Youth Development ahead of the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Edo.
The athletes have also vowed to boycott the event if their demands were not met.
The NSF has been rescheduled to hold from January 3-17 after it was postponed for a second time by the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development.
They also denied people entry into the premises of the state’s ministry.
One of the athletes who spoke with journalists, Usman Kudus, said the athletes rejected the N1000 per day allowance promised by the ministry and have demanded for N3000.
“They are telling us, they will pay us but we are very sure they will short pay us which we don’t want,” Kudus said.
“We want them to pay us more than the seven days they (ministry), booked for us. We want our allowances to be increased to N3000 or we will boycott the tournament.”
The state Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Joana Kolo, who addressed the athletes asked them to sheath their swords as they try to resolve the matter amicably.
She promised that their demands will be looked into and that the ministry will get to them in few days time.
