Insurgency: Govt must take decisive action against foreigners masquerading as citizens

Abeni Obomeileh Mohammed (SAN) graduated from the University of Ife now Obafemi Awolowo University in 1982 and was called to Bar in 1983. He had his NYSC with Kwara State Polytechnic after which he worked with J. O. Ijaodola & Co. until 1987 when he set up his private office and became a Notary Public in 1992. In 2012, he was awarded the title of the Senior Advocates of the Masses (SAM) by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in recognition of his resolve to always fight for peoples right. In this interview with ACTING EDITOR, MUMINI ABDULKAREEM, he speaks on the present insecurity and insurgency in the country among other issues. Excerpts:
Our state of insecurity is getting worse daily. What do you think can be done to salvage it?
The unprecedented state of insecurity in this country is associated with the advent of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in the sense that the perpetrators of these crimes, whether banditry, kidnapping or what have you, whether we like it or not are foreign Fulanis. I will like to say foreign Fulanis because we have always had Fulanis in this country, we have herders who have been cohabiting peacefully with their host communities. But the moment Buhari imported foreign Fulanis into the country was when the problem started and people are aware of it like former EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu and Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai. The latter even noted it was part of the plan to remove Jonathan from power. Governor of Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje also noted that the people committing all these crimes are foreign Fulanis who should be asked to leave. I don’t know why we are shying away from this fact that Buhari is the one that imported these terrorists Fulani into the country. He said it in Alexandria around 2018 when he attended the AU Conference where he invited foreigners that they can come to Nigeria. Now we have insecurity everywhere. Its either they are committing banditry, cattle rustling, kidnapping, killing and raping people which takes place both in the North and Southern part of the country. The question now is why the rapid degeneration of security in the country, why is it that 80% of the crimes are committed by Fulanis, why is it now that the Fulanis are committing these crimes? Fulanis have always been in Nigeria before including herders, they mix with farmers and live in peace and harmony with everybody. But these breed of Fulanis are so ruthless and callous because they’re not Nigerians so they don’t care about whose horse is gored. They kill indiscriminately and rob people of their valuables to buy more ammunition. All they want is to dominate the area they’re residing at and we can’t say we have not been warned about the impending insecurity that people will be coming to steal our lands. We were warned by TY Danjuma and former President Olushegun Obasanjo. So why should Nigerians be surprised, rather than hold Buhari responsible, that the people he brought into Nigeria should be taken back to where they came from, he isn’t even saying anything. These foreigners masquerading as Nigerians are armed to the teeth. Many of them are even more armed than the Nigerian Army with sophisticated weapons, what are they using them for if not for the purpose of killing and acquiring people’s land and make Nigeria their home. It is unfortunate that we have a rubber stamp House of Assembly that is so docile that they cannot come up with a solution now that the executive is hopelessly useless. They are even using the Nigerian Army to assist the foreigners who are killing Nigerians.
Should we now sit down and hope that things will get better now that people are afraid of even using the Nigerian road?
What did Danjuma said in 2019, he said we should go and arm ourselves to defend our land. Even the Governor of Bauchi State said it is proper for Fulanis to be armed, and these are foreign nomads that can stay anywhere even in the forest which is owned by some people. These are forests that are reserved by the respective governments; you’re just allowed to visit the forests not to turn it into criminal hideouts. Many of them don’t even have cows, they’re just hiding in the forest to commit crimes. The only way out is for the government to go and flush them out but Buhari won’t allow them to do that. Buhari is protecting them even with the Nigerian army, so let Nigerians be armed to defend themselves. Some of the soldiers are deserting the army and Boko Haram are waxing stronger, they have started capturing some local government again in the north east.
But some people believe that the call for people to defend themselves can worsen the situation?
How is it going to worsen the situation when you have no one to defend you, will you just fold your arms and wait for the foreign aggressors to come and kill you? If they know you’re armed too, they will be less confident to come and fight you. So the Army is helpless, they’re taking sides with them, you see what happened in Ogun state? The soldiers were forcing the villagers to accept the Fulanis into their midst and they were led there by the soldiers. The police are equally dormant. Since the EndSARS, they have abandoned their duties. They will see crimes being committed and chose to turn a blind eye to it. Do you now fold your arms and wait to be killed? I mean that is the last resort, we’re already descending to anarchy. Nobody should wait to be killed when you can defend yourself.
