Kwara NLC set for showdown with govt

The Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)is set for a showdown with the Kwara Government over the lingering unpaid minimum wage.
Recall that the labour union and the Kwara State government’s meeting last year ended in deadlock.
Speaking with our reporter on Thursday, shortly after the state executive meeting held at the labour house, Ilorin, the chairman of NLC, Kwara State chapter, Comrade Issa Aliu Ore said the union as concluded plans to join its national body to embark on industrial action over unpaid minimum wage and oil prices in the country.
According to the labour leader, “There is a directive from the national head office to all the affected branches to embark on industrial actionence the need for this meeting.
“The purpose for this meeting is to communicate to the house NEC’s decision which was arrived at during the meeting myself and other executive members attended.
“There is a directive to go on strike by the head office of the Nigeria Labour Congress and we were asked to relate this to our members. It depend on the consensus agreement reached today. There will be a congress of NLC on Monday after which our position will be made known,” Ore further said.
He added that the union’s meeting with the Kwara State Government last year hit brick wall as the template brought before workers in the state by the government is nothing to write home about.
“We had a deadlock with the Kwara State Government the other time because the template brought before us was unacceptable.
“The template is that they are going to pay N30,000 minimum wage to level 1-6 and that level 7-17 adjustment is not acceptable, ” he disclosed.
Kwara is one of the very few states yet to implement or make allocation for the new national minimum wage.
Our medium learnt that the worker’s union in Kwara state, after its meeting with the State Executive Council vowed to force the state governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to be sensitive to plight of workers.
However, the Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq will on Tuesday meet with labour leaders on the consequential adjustment component of the minimum wage.
This was contained in a statement by the Chief Press Decretary to the Kwara State Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye.
“The Governor will lead the government’s team to interface with labour leaders to again look at the pending issues concerning the minimum wage,” the statement added.
