Suspected Boko Haram insurgents killed 24 soldiers in an attack in Tchoukoutalia, Lac region of Chad.
Haki Diddy, the region’s deputy prefect, said the troops were attacked while resting after a patrol on Wednesday.
Apart from the 24 soldiers killed in the attack, he said several others were wounded.
“Troops from a returning patrol were resting when they were attacked by Boko Haram on Wednesday,” he said.
“Twenty-four troops were killed, several were wounded and others have scattered into the countryside.”
Azeem Bermandoa, the army spokesman, confirmed that the attack happened at a Chadian army position.
The region has witnessed several attacks by Boko Haram. The last attack took place on April 27.
It is the second time in two weeks that insurgents will be attacking a military position in a neigbhouring country.
On July 24, Boko Haram insurgents overran an army base in Cameroon’s far north region, killing seven soldiers and wounding several others.
The insurgents, some of whom wore military camouflage, arrived in a convoy of six vehicles.
After several hours of fighting, the commander of the base was killed alongside six of his colleagues.
