Backlog: KWSG commences payment to ex-council chairs, councillors

Immediate past elected council chairmen, their vice, former councillors, and other affected members of the last elected council administration in Kwara State have started receiving payment of their backlogs, National Pilot, gathered, last night.
This development was part of the serious efforts by the government to find solution to the lingering salary backlog in the state.
Some former council chairmen and ex councillors who confided in this medium confirmed the development last night.
It was gathered that N16 million has been earmarked monthly to all the local government councils through the state government in the last three months for the affected officers.
According to one of the sources, they are being paid 30 per cent of their monthly salary in the last three months with efforts in top quarters to clear the arrears completely.
N150,000 had also being paid by the government as part of their furniture and wardrobe allowance.
“The affected workers were owed 30 per cent of their salaries before they left office which amount to N40,000, about N50, 000 and N74,000 for ex-councilors, ex-vice chairman and former chairman.
“One million naira monthly is being paid by the state government through the local government every month and we are also expecting the money this month for which they say is meant to keep body and soul afloat.
“Few months ago, we were given N150,000 from our pending furniture allowance we have long agitated for. The arrangement has really helped to calm frayed nerves and bathed anticipation,” a source added.
Over three billion naira is reportedly being owed the affected workers and this “palliative” is described as a sign of the readiness and seriousness of the government to clear the backlog.
In his response to a text message sent to him on the issue, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Dr Muideen Akorede said he is not aware of any such development.
