Some Constabulary Policemen in Kwara State, numbering 1056, have lamented the non – payment of their salaries by the Kwara State government, with many of them being owed up to 6 months salary arrears, National Pilot learnt.
Speaking with our reporter on Tuesday, one of the affected community police officer, AbdulRauf Ajadi said that the non – payment of their salaries had thrown most of them into untold hardship, such that they cannot feed their families and provide their needs.
“We were appointed by the government during last Ramadan fasting and since then we were not given any salary. We are living by the grace of God. It is sad that 6 months after, the government didn’t deem it fit to give us our appointment letter nor bother to pay our salary.
“I was posted to Adewole police station as a community police officer. We are up to 24 posted here and up till now we don’t our faith. Things have gone worsen for us because most of us had leaved our job for this,” he said.
Asked what their next line of action would be if the government doesn’t attend to them immediately, AbdulRauf said they would protest peacefully.
“Our next line of action is to demonstrate peacefully and in a manner that will show that we are law-abiding citizens,” he stated.
Similarly, Jos Kolawole , a Constabulary policeman at C Division lamented the hardship and agony the nonpayment of their salaries has put him and his colleague.
“It is getting to 6 months including a month we spent at training. I am an electrician before I enlisted into the community police service by the Kwara state government. The rumour around was that the while monies would be paid by the government at once.
“Our situation is bad. We were not told that our service will be voluntary. We had yesterday that the governor said he did not remembered that he owe us. W rare still hopeful that they would pay us.
“But if by the end of this year without any sign of payment, I will have to leave the job. I have spent all the proceed from my former job with the expectation that our salary will be paid as at when due.I have 3 children In school and paying their school fees had been a tussle. Feeding too has been tough for me , ” Jos lamented.
Also, Balogun Suleiman said if their patience is not complimented , he would have to leave the service and carry his cross.
“We have not been paid a dime all these while. We have contacted the office of the governor over this matter and since then we haven’t gotten any positive response. If we don’t have hope on the job, we will leave the job.
“It’s been close to 6 months now that we have been recruited and the state government has not discussed anything about our salary even though they didn’t capture or collect our bank account details for salary and we’ve taken series of step to reach the governor to know what is on ground for us, but all the efforts till now still prove abortive, including the letter we sent to the Governor’s office last month and we haven’t gotten any response till now.
“Before we were recruited they didn’t tell us that we are going for a voluntary job and this job has rendered us useless in our family because we’ve lost our previous source of income since we have joined this job, those who are artisans have lost their customers since we have been in training, we just want to plead the state government to attend to our plight,” he urged.
It will be recalled in May Kwara State Government recruited 1056 police special constabularies (community police) that were deployed to their various local governments to strengthen intelligence gathering and security in the state.
