Ogun begins palliative work on Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road ahead NLC 21-day ultimatum

Less than three days to expiration of the 21-days ultimatum issued by the Ogun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress to shut down the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway over its deplorable condition, the State Government has concluded plans to commence palliative work on the road by Monday.
The State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Emmanuel Bankole, who in company of members of unions and residents of Ota under the auspices of Ota Progressive Youth Intervention had issued the 21-days ultimatum shortly after protesting the deplorable condition of the road.
Recall that the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola and Abiodun had visited Ota to assess the bad condition of the road with a promise to residents and road users that construction or palliative work would start on it soon.
But, due to delay in work from the federal government to commence reconstruction of the road, the state governor, regardless of the ownership of the road, issued a directive to the engineers to commence palliative on it by Monday.
In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, Abiodun said that the deplorable situation of the road had subjected residents and motorists plying the road to discomfort hence the need to begin a palliative work on the road.
He stated that the palliative roadworks, which would concurrently run with the ongoing rehabilitation work on Sango Ota-Idiroko Road, were just to bring relief to the people in the area and make the road usable pending completion of its reconstruction by Julius Berger.
“On the instructions of the Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, engineers will on Monday begin palliative works on Sango Ota-Joju Road in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area.”
“The development is coming regardless of the ownership of the road by the Federal Government. The deplorable and unusable condition of the road, which has for some time plagued the axis, residents and road users, makes it extremely important to immediately put in place palliative measures.
“These palliative roadworks, which will run concurrently with what is going on Sango Ota-Idiroko Road, are simply to bring succour and make the road usable pending completion of its reconstruction by Julius Berger”, the statement added.
