‘PDP Sets to Elect New Officials’.

By Jimoh Sulyman from Abuja
The whole nation is anxious and waiting as the leading opposition party in the country, The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, is set to elect its new executives to pilot the affairs of the party for the next four years.
The party is set to hold its national convention tomorrow,Saturday,30th of October, in the Federal capital territory, Abuja at the iconic Eagle square.
This is a crucial moment for the party with the 2023 general elections in sight, with the view that the new officials will help to guide the party to victory at the polls.
The convention is set to hold despite opposition from some members of the party as the Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in its ruling today  ordered the Party to go on with its planned National Convention unhindered.
This was on the heels of dismissal of the application by the sacked National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, seeking the suspension of the Convention scheduled for tomorrow.
There are three positions that are keenly contested for and the outcome of those positions might inevitably determine the future of the party, the positions are, National Chairman,National deputy chairman and National publicity secretary.
The constitution has it that, once the Chairman of the party is from the south, the presidential candidate will be from the North and vice versa, meaning the Chairman and the presidential candidate must come from alternate part of the country.
And with many experts calculating that the northern part of the country having the likes of Senator.Abubakar Bukola Saraki, former Senate President and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former vice president of the country, is likely to produce the presidential candidate for the party, when the party hold its Congress.
This is putting the party in a very tricky situation as many reports has it that the party is opting for a Northerner from Benue state and a former Senate President,Iyorchia Ayu to emerge as the consensus candidate for the chairmanship position, which will be almost impossible.
Hence if the experts predictions are right and the party’s presidential candidate emerges from the North, the prospective party Chairman who is touted to be from the North as well, will have no choice but to resign for the National deputy chairman to take over from him.
Because It is stated in the constitution of the party, that, in the absence of the National chairman, for whatever reason, it is the National deputy chairman that will take over from him.
Premising on that, the post of the chairman, might be a tentative one, which will be determined by the outcome of the party’s Congress, it now evident that in the long run, the position that might become the most crucial to the future of the party is the post of the National deputy chairman.
The battle for the position of the number 2 member of the party is between the duo of Olagunsoye Oyinlola,a former National secretary of the party and former Governor of Osun state and Hon Taofiq Arapaja ,a former deputy Governor of Oyo state.
The nation is keenly awaiting the outcome of the Convention, that will be cursor for what will become of the political complexion of the country in the coming years.
Vying for the post of Deputy chairman (North) is Hajia Inna Ciroma, who is getting a massive support from the women folks in the party, as a matter of fact ,they obtained the nomination form for her, standing in her way is Alhaji Umar Damagum ,both of whom are from Yobe state.
