Government spending should be well accounted for – Manzuma

Barrister Mazuma Issa is the former Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Ilorin Chapter, Kwara State and the lead counsel of Mazuma Isa & Co.

In this interview with JIMOH SULYMAN, he speaks on excessive cost of running the state, among other sundry issues. Excerpts:

What are your thoughts when you hear of Nigerian cost of governance?

I must start by saying that cost of running this democratic government is unreasonable and expensive for us as a nation, democracy suppose to address the issues of growth and development but fortunately, for our democratic experience, what we have are negative developments, we have challenges of cultism, kidnapping. It is quite unfortunate, the development in our polity. The basis of these is bad governance which is not measuring up to its cost, leading to unemployment, poverty and indiscipline in the society. Bad governance must be tackled for us to be able to nip the excesses in the bud.

Many people have faulted the state government for misplaced of priority in their spending culture, what is you take on this development?

For me, then when I came on board as the chairman of NBA, my first major assignment was to complete the bar secretariat, this is to provide operational skills for the bar, there is no way government or organised informal sector could operate very well without good spending which must be accounted for, we cannot continue to leave in the 19th when other countries of the world have gone far. so if the Government needs to spend, they shouldn’t be hindered but it must be well recorded and accounted for.
