Spiritualist bag 3-month jail for sexual abuse

A spiritualist in Ilorin, Kwara State, Yusuf Awosoya was sentenced to three months imprisonment for deceitfully having canal knowledge of an eighteen years old (name withheld) student of Kwara State University, Malete.

The convict, Awosoya was sentenced on Tuesday by a magistrate court sitting in the State capital.

Awosoya was dragged before Magistrate Bilikis Baraje for assault to outrage a woman modesty, contrary to section 268 of the Penal Code Law.

The police First Information Report (FIR) revealed that the case was transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking Women and Children Protection Unit, Police Headquarters, Ilorin after the victim had reported the matter to the Malete police station.

The victim had complained that Awosoya of no fixed address in Malete unlawfully had sexual intercourse with her along the bush path in that community.

The FIR further revealed that during discreet investigation conducted by the police, Awosoya deceitfully lured the victim into believing that he is administering spiritual assistance on her by obtaining her consent to have intercourse with her.

The accused person admitted guilty to the crime and prayed the court to temper justice with mercy.

The prosecutor, Inspector Adewumi Johnson prayed the court to remand the accused in prison custody.

The counsel to the accused, Mrs. Jimoh prayed the court to temper justice with mercy, adding that  the accused has realised his mistakes and he is sober by admitting before the  court that he is guilty of the crime.

She pleaded further that the court should consider the fact he did not allow it to go through rigorous trial.

In his ruling, Baraje sentenced the accused to three months imprisonment without option of fine.
