In a shocking display of criminal audacity, a 36-year-old driver, Amos Daniel, stole his employer’s car on his first day of work to pretend he had purchased a vehicle and testify to it in church.

Daniel was paraded alongside six other suspects, including two dismissed soldiers, by Lagos police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Tuesday.

“I was employed as a driver. The first day I was employed, I stole my madam’s car to go and give testimony in church that I have bought a car and it is what God has done for me,” Daniel confessed.

Hundeyin revealed that the two dismissed soldiers, Akeem Suleiman and Abdulau Mohammed, were part of a four-man gang that specialized in snatching vehicles at gunpoint from motorists in Lagos.

“They have been operating for quite a long time. Two of them are dismissed soldiers, one was dismissed in 2014 and the other in 2017. They carried out their crime wearing full military gear,” Hundeyin said.

The police spokesperson commended the tactical team based in Surulere for successfully arresting the robbery gang. “We have successfully arrested a robbery gang through our tactical team based in Surulere. The four-man gang specialized in snatching vehicles at gunpoint from motorists in Lagos,” he said.

Daniel’s employer was not named, but it is clear that the driver’s actions were a brazen act of deception and theft. The case highlights the need for thorough background checks and vigilance in the workplace.
