In the midst of torrential downpours that have caused widespread flooding, a newly constructed two-storey building collapsed in Lagos on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place at No. 12 Cameroun Street, off Ewenla in Mushin.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the collapse. Tragically, an unidentified child was reportedly dead in the rubble.
Seven survivors—three women and four men—were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. LASEMA confirmed that its search and rescue team has combed through the debris and affirmed that no additional victims are trapped. The site has been secured, with operations ongoing, according to Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA.
Local residents and onlookers have attributed the collapse to substandard construction materials. One resident identified as Cmon remarked, “This flooding happens every year in Lagos. Every damn year, what the hell is the government doing to curb it, Absolutely nothing”
