The kwara state’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) has adopted a major shift on how it’s candidates emerged in future elections in the state.

Henceforth, candidates vying for elections under the party’s umbrella, must emerge through the wards.

This new method, the party believed, will deepen it’s internal democractic process and ensure that only the most acceptable and most popular candidates emerge.

PDP’s new political direction was revealed by the President of the 8th Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki when he visited Kwara State last Tuesday to attend the fidau of his departed aide, Alhaji Yusuf Kayode Maja

According to the former two-term governor of the state, the emergence through the grassroots by candidates of the party will ensure a level playing field for all party members to contest for any position in the state.

Saraki also declared that he is no longer going to endorse any candidate for any election, emphasizing that whoever wants to contest any election in the state should go and test his popularity at his ward.

” The era of express endorsement from me is over. Whoever is serious about contesting any election in kwara here, should go to his ward and win the trust and approval of his people at the grassroots. This is the only way we can provide a level playing field. This is the only way forward to regain our party’s lost glory.

The last local government election in the state has shown that this is the way to go. This is right path to toe. The party did well and actually won the election, but for the criminal manipulation of the results.

What made this achievable was the grassroots approach.

Nobody should seek my endorsement for any election. I can only come step in after such candidate may have emerged through the method have just adopted.

Saraki’s Press officer on Home Matter, Abdulqadir Abdulganiyu, who spoke to National pilot said ” Dr Saraki did not plan to hold any political meetings during his visit for Alhaji Yusuf Kayode Maja’s Firdaus. However, he seized the opportunity to meet with party candidates from the recent local government elections.

“He commended the candidates and the party’s stakeholders for their perseverance throughout the elections, despite the unfavorable outcomes. He remarked that the public’s reaction to the election results indicated that the people of Kwara genuinely supported the PDP candidates. Urging the candidates to strengthen their connection with the grassroots.

“Moreover, Dr Saraki stressed that the selection of future candidates within the Kwara State PDP will no longer involve stakeholders or party elites, but will be strictly based on primary elections.

This new approach is expected to foster greater inclusivity and ensure that candidates truly represent the will of the people at the grassroots level.”
