Kwara PDP Shrugs Off Defections, Says Party Remains Strong and Focused
The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has downplayed recent defections within the party at the national level, declaring that the PDP in Kwara remains “strong, united, and focused” despite political realignments elsewhere.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the State Chairman, Rt. Honourable Babatunde Mohammed, the party urged its members and supporters across the state to remain calm and resolute, assuring them that such political movements are not unusual.
“What is important at this moment is for us in Kwara State to view these events, not as a setback, but as a challenge to recommit ourselves to the cause of rebuilding our party from the polling units to the ward, local government, and state levels,”Mohammed stated.
The PDP said recent developments, including defections in Delta State, should be seen as a “necessary phase of purification,” rather than a cause for concern. According to the party, those who left the PDP “only made it obvious that they are insensitive to the plight of the people who suffer from the current economic crisis caused by the poor governance and lack of clear economic policies of the APC government in the state.”
The statement also praised former Senate President and national PDP leader, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, for his recent nationwide address, describing it as a beacon of hope and a call to action.
” The recent message of hope and reassurance released by our leader, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has put a clear end to the mischievous propaganda and spurious speculation being deliberately sponsored by the Abdulrazaq-led APC government in Kwara to create doubt in the minds of our members and supporters.
“As a party, it’s our belief that Dr Saraki’s message, although directed to the entire nation but it is not only a national clarion call but a direct charge to Kwarans to close ranks, ignore distractions, and channel our energy toward reclaiming the state in 2027,” the party stated.
The Kwara PDP reiterated its commitment to the ideals of inclusivity, grassroots empowerment, and people-centered governance, recalling the party’s legacy of progressive leadership in the state.
“This is not the time for despair or hesitation. It is the time to go back to the basics—organizing and mobilizing at the polling unit level, strengthening our wards and local government structures, and speaking directly to the yearnings of our people.
“We call on all loyal party members to close ranks, ignore distractions, and prepare for the bigger task ahead. The PDP in Kwara is not just a political party—it is a movement of people with good conscience, unity of purpose, and genuine development,” the statement further read.
The party expressed optimism about reclaiming power in the next electoral cycle, stating that “ together, with determination and discipline, we will return our state to the path of inclusive growth and people-driven governance.”
