National Tennis Championship: Kwara’s Abdulfatai Wins Men’s Singles

The Fifth Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial National Table Tennis Championships, held in Otan Ayegbaju, Osun State, witnessed an electrifying display of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship from talented players across Nigeria. Among the standout performers were Abdulbasit Abdulfatai from Kwara State and Hope Udoaka from Cross River State, who emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s singles categories, respectively.

In the men’s singles final, Abdulfatai showcased his exceptional technique and tactical prowess, dominating Matthew Fabunmi 4-0 (12-10, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7). This impressive victory marked a significant milestone for Kwara State, highlighting the state’s growing prominence in Nigerian table tennis.

The women’s singles final saw Udoaka outclassing veteran Halima Hussain of Oyo State 4-1 (11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 11-7). Udoaka’s victory was a testament to her hard work, dedication, and exceptional skill, solidifying her position as one of the top players in the country.

The tournament also featured thrilling competitions in the U15 categories, with Ifeoluwa Ajasa from Lagos claiming the girls’ crown and Marvelous Joseph from Kogi emerging victorious in the boys’ final. These young players demonstrated remarkable talent and potential, hinting at a bright future for Nigerian table tennis.

The Fifth Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial National Table Tennis Championships was a resounding success, thanks to the tireless efforts of the organizers and the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF). The event attracted players from various states and clubs, showcasing the depth of talent in Nigerian table tennis. The grand finale was attended by notable dignitaries, including Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke and the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun.

The N11.5m prize money sanctioned by the NTTF was a testament to the organization’s commitment to promoting table tennis in Nigeria.
