41 Students benefit Saraki’s N2m scholarship awards

 

No fewer than 41 indigent students in Agbaji, Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State benefitted scholarship awards courtesy of the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki.
The beneficiaries were drawn from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin and Kwara State Colleges of Education, Ilorin and Oro.
The recipients were presented the scholarship awards on Friday at a programme organised by the education committee of Agbaji Development Association and sponsored by Saraki.
Speaking, at the event, an Islamic scholar, Sheikh Khidru Asukuti, charged the affluent in the society to assist the less privileged in order to improve their standard of living.
He noted that government alone cannot meet all the needs of the people, calling on philanthropists to lend support by assisting to alleviate suffering of the poor.
Asukuti pointed out that Allah would reward acts of generosity in abundance, particularly that which is extended to the poor.
He applauded the Senate President for his commitment towards improving the standard of education in Kwara and by extension Nigeria.
In his remarks, the chairman of scholarship committee, Engr. Salau Funsho Alabi said that Saraki advised the association to set up committees for easy administration.
He stated further that the standing committees will serve as forum where issues relating to community development would be addressed.
According to him, education, financial assistance, empowerment and employment committees among others would soon be set-up.
Alabi said, after inauguration, the committee compiled and shortlisted names of indigent students for scholarship.
He disclosed that over N2million scholarships have been awarded to 41 successful indigent students in order to cushion the effect of hardship on their parents.
He added that recently, 30 secondary school students within the community were presented cash award of N16, 000 each to obtain NABTEB forms.
Alabi added that financial assistance will be provided to another 30 secondary school students with five credits (including English and Mathematics) in their Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), to obtain JAMB forms. He added that the gesture will be extended to Islamic schools students and primary school pupils.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Abdulmutalib Aminat, thanked Saraki for the intervention, adding that it would ease the financial responsibilities of their parents. She promised that the recipients would reciprocate the gesture by excelling in their studies.
