A Professor of Islamic Studies, University of Ilorin, Hashir Abdulsalam, yesterday urged parents and guardians to make the upbringing of their children a priority regardless of their busy schedule.
Speaking with newsmen after a thanksgiving prayer organised by committee of friends to commemorate his elevation to professorial rank, Abdulsalam said parents have crucial role to play in curbing moral decadence that has assumed an alarming dimension.
The prayer held at Hilal Crescent Mosque, GRA, Ilorin, was at the instance of the immediate-past Dean, Postgraduate School of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Badmas ‘Lanre Yusuf.
The celebrant called for adequate parental guidance in the training of children, saying this would safeguard them against bad company and peer influences.
He spoke against the backdrop of a musical video “One Corner”, which went viral on the social media platforms recently where Muslim female students clad in hijab were seen dancing in a manner considered questionable.
The don said such dance portrayed Islam in bad image, adding that the responsibility to prepare children for future challenges lies in parental guidance.
“It (One Corner) portrays Islam in bad image, and that shows the level at which those children are operating; they don’t have good background.
“I had an experience in University (of Ilorin) when I was Sub-Dean, Faculty of Arts. A lady came to my office almost half naked, and I told her to get away from my office. When I invited her back, and asked her name, she said Zainab. I told her you are Zainab and you appeared this way. I should never see you like this again.
“I gave her a message that if you go to the market to buy pap, one is opened and one is not opened, which one would you take. She said she would take the one that is not opened.
Just as the other one that is open had been contaminated, your breast is also contaminated, I told her since then, she changed and she became a very good Muslim.
“It is from home the parents should work harder and ensure that they give their children proper training wherever they go so that they can show the beauties of Islam”, Abdulsalam said.
On his elevation to professorial rank, he expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah, describing it as a tremendous achievement.
In separate lectures, former Director of Academic Planning, Unilorin, Prof. Abdulsalam Oladosu and ex- Deputy Provost, Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies, Dr Abdulhamid Aminullahi Olounoyin, enjoined Muslim scholars to raise new generation to succeed them.
The prayer session was led by a lecturer from Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Dr Yusuf Kolawole Jimoh.
