Education free in Kwara, commissioner insists

 

Kwara State government has insisted that  education remains free for all children in the state from the basic up to the secondary school level.
The state Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Bilikisu Oniyangi, disclosed  this while featuring on a special edition of ‘Oro to nlo’, on Unilorin FM 89.3,.
The Commissioner explained that the state government did not determine the PTA levy but has the duty to regulate the payment in a way that will be very affordable for parents.
She said the levy was an agreement within the Parent Teachers Association, Nigeria Union of Teachers and ANCOPs as part of measures to assist the respective schools in their own little way.
She explained that what students are made to pay as approved by the government is just a token that range from between 1,500 and 1,400 for Senior and Junior Secondary School students respectively.
Commenting on the standard of the public schools in the state, the Education Commissioner said she has more than 70 per cent confidence in the state’s public school.
She opined that the standard of the state education is very intact but identified the cognitive aspect which include teachers, facilities, funding and management as the challenges before it.
The Commissioner, who was optimistic about better standard of education in the state, called on all stakeholders in education sector to join hands with government to collectively attain the government’s set goals of ‘every child counts’ policy.
