By Matthew Denis

The Kwara State Chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has directed all workers in the state, both public and private sectors and members of Civil Society Organisations to join a rally on minimum wage, tomorrow (Tuesday).

The Chairman of NLC in the state, Comrade Yekeen Agunbiade made this known in a letter addressed to the state Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed on Friday.

He stressed that the letter was to inform the Governor that all workers, market men and women as well as artisans would take part in the sensitisation rally called by the National body of NLC.

Agunbiade, in the letter titled: “Directive on National rally on new minimum wage” said total mobilisation of workers across the country should commence immediately.

“It has become obvious that the Federal Government is foot dragging or unwilling to implement the N30,000 as agreed by the tripartite committee on new national minimum wage.

“The rally is to sensitise workers and Nigerians on the new minimum wage issue and the rally should be held in all the states of the federation, including FCT, Abuja on Tuesday 30th October, 2018.

“Consequent upon the above, the leadership of the Congress and all workers of the State of Harmony are looking forward to Your Excellency’s cooperation and understanding in this regard,” he added.

According to the NLC boss, the rally which will begin from 8am was in preparation for an indefinite nationwide strike to commence on November 6, 2018.

Agunbiade said the rally would take-off from the Labour House through Lajorin Street/Muritala Mohammed Way-Post office-Emir’s Road-Taiwo Isale-Unity Road-‘A Division roundabout-Ahmadu Bello Way to Government House, Ilorin.

…FG urged to review revenue allocation formula

By Joke Adeniyi Jackson

As labour unions in the country warm up for an indefinite strike, the Federal Government has been urged to review upward revenue allocation to states and local governments.

This is to enable states live up to salary obligations and curb incessant industrial action by Nigerian workers.

The charge was made by the Spiritual Father/Chairman, Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Worldwide, The Most Revd (Dr.) Samuel Adefila Abidoye, at a press conference ahead of the78th International Conference/Convention  at Galilee land, Orile Igbon, Oyo State, last Thursday.

Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had threatened to shut down the country as from November 6, if government does not meet the demand on minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

Speaking on the development, the spiritual father , who noted that the  demand by the Nigerian  workers through their labour leaders is genuine, said the salaries review  is long overdue.

As way out, he  said the Federal Government should without further delay agree on a final minimum wage for workers in the country in order to avoid future industrial unrest.

“However, before taking a final decision on this, the present Revenue Allocation Formular should be reviewed immediately in order to allow states and the Local Government Areas implement the new salaries without any problem.

“No doubt, the states, local government areas and the private sectors will not be able to implement the agreed minimum wage if the present Revenue Allocations going to these arms of government are not jerked up considerably.”

Abidoye also suggested that all avenues for financial leakages should be blocked before government and labour draw conclusion on minimum wage.

“Government and Labour should not rush into conclusion without blocking all avenues that could eventually make nonsense of the proposal through inflation which would not be unable to control after the implementation of the new minimum wage. ”

On the 2019 general election,  he called on Nigerians to shun money bag politicians and vote their conscience.

He noted that the just concluded gubernatorial elections in Ekiti and Osun states was characterised by vote buying urged politicians to desist from such.

The cleric also charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to “really remain independent in the 2019 general elections in order to give credibility to the exercise and allow the people’s choices prevail.

The Spiritual Father who condemned the current killings in Kaduna urged government and security agents in the country to do the needful by putting a stop to the carnage.
