National carrier should be  private sector driven – Expert

By Matthew Denis

An Aviation Expert, Mr. Chidera Anozie has said that for the successful operations of the national carrier,  it  should be private sector driven.

He then called on the Federal Government to ensure that the nation gets its own carrier soon.

He stated this during an interview with Pilot Aviation at the Ilorin International Airport, on Saturday.

Anozie, who is the Assistant Manager, Product and Strategy Planning of Travelport Nigeria, stressed that the country is ripe enough to have a national carrier that can compete favourably with other carriers in the world.

He said, “The Nigeria aviation sector is still growing when compared to  global  standard. We still have one or two issues, but what is required is for the industry to be manned by technocrats  and not politicians.

“We need technocrats and professionals to manage the industry rather than politicians because these are people that are tested and trusted with the requisite technical know-how.

“We also need to be data and research driven to enhance better quality service to air passengers and move with the trend that is happening in the world of  aviation industry.”

According to him, if the carrier is properly implemented by the Federal Government it will bring a lot of development to Nigeria when all the stakeholders are carried along.

He said, ” But the issue is we need to carry out proper analysis why the Nigeria Airways failed in the past to build a better carrier. We also need to do findings on the successful airlines in Africa like the Ethiopia airline and South Africa Airline.”
