The drop in the standard of education in the country has been blamed largely on poor communication skills of teachers in various schools across the country.
This was revealed by the Head of Teachers Development, Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Kayode Alabi last Tuesday during a programme tagged; “The Teacher Rebuild” organised by YATTIYR Scholarship Initiative at Munfa’at Akanbi Library, Onikanga, Ilorin.
According to Alabi, any teacher that want to make impact must learn how to communicate stressing that teachers must make sure they carry the students along so that they can understand what they are being taught.
He said that the problems facing students and teachers is multi-facet adding that colleges of education and faculty of education in universities must ensure the teachers are taken through the needed training.
“During recruitment, we discovered that majority of teachers were not writing exams and going through interviews to confirm how qualified they are before being posted to schools for teaching. This explains why some teachers have problem because they can’t communicate.”
Speaking further, he said the state government is actually doing its best to make Kwara education system better for all.
He however charged stakeholders to support the government on education adding that everyone has a role to play.
“Government too should provide facility and good learning environment and parents should support their children with school fees, uniform, reading and writing materials. Students too must have the heart to learn. All these are working together to make learning easier.”
Alabi tasked government on recruitment of quality personnel and training and retraining of teachers.
He warned against employing teachers through political influence without due process. “During our time, we wrote exams and also passed the interview. Those who qualified were given appointments while those that failed the test were trained to develop self,” he stated.
Earlier in his welcome address, the President of the Yattiyr Scholarship Initiatives, Fatoye John said that the organisation which was founded in April 2018 has continued to contribute its quota to the development of education through scholarship to students.
According to him, 28 students have benefited scholarship from the organisation.
