Police is your friend (II)

with Saliu Woru Mohammed

Continued from last week

In a nutshell, Ado has created a better police image as the policemen now are friendlier to the public. Hence, all the officers of the command are now courteous, polite and amiable in the discharge of their constitutional duties. Unlike in the past, the police in the state has made itself more accountable and responsive to the public. This to a large extent explains the breakthrough that the policemen of the command have achieved over-time.

The recent swapping or transfer of policemen from Adewole Police Station to various divisions in the command apparently in response to the public out-cry is well commendable and applauded. The Commissioner of Police thus demonstrated a rare responsiveness to the yearnings and aspirations of the people. My recent visit and interaction with the police chief showed clearly that he belongs to the fine breed of police chiefs in the country. During the interaction, he was very eloquent in discussing security issues, brilliant in arguments, efficient and effective in the discharge of his constitutional duties. He is always prepared to welcome genuine criticism and sound suggestion; he made it clear that bail is FREE and advised that litigants should desist from offering gratifications to his men, as both the giver and the receiver of bribe are criminally liable in the face of the law.

My dear reader, may I appeal to you to regard the police as your friend rather than a foe. Perhaps, it is necessary to say that there is no organisation that has no share of some bad eggs, hence, you and I should endeavour to tolerate the men and women of the police, but not to hesitate to report their bad behavours to the most senior officers at the police station when the need arises. The Police is your friend and let us resolved to support the establishment in their on-going effort in fighting crime and criminality in our society and where necessary people should offer them useful advice.

Finally, the police should continue to regard themselves as veritable servant of the public rather than been the boss. Since there is no police that can succeed without enjoying the goodwill and desired support of the general public, the police should not regard as mere slogan, the police adage – “the police is your friend” but should learn how to practicalise it. At all times, the police should be courteous and polite in the discharge of their lawful functions by refusing to engage in all sorts of corrupt practices, truancy or even accidental discharge.

Security Hints:

  1. Are you always vigilant when you are watching football match at the stadium, so as to discover people of shabby characters?
  2. Do you always wind-up your vehicle side glasses or lock you car doors when you are transacting business at super markets or in markets places, including post office or motor parks?
  3. Are you always vigilant when you are lodging in hotels or guesthouses, so as to detect people of bad characters who may be hanging around the premises?
  4. Do you always screen your house-made/business partner’ credentials well before you employ or engage in any business transactions with them?

However, if your answers to the above questions are NO, you are hereby advice to start doing so as from today for your own benefits so that you will not fall victim of criminal. To be continued next week
