Queen Elizabeth School emerges winner of Kwara brain point challenge

Queen Elizabeth Secondary School (QESS), Ilorin, has emerged winner of a quiz competition, Kwara Brain Point Challenge organised for public secondary schools in the state.

The event, which was the maiden edition, was organised by the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development in collaboration with a Non Governmental Organisation,  Yattiyr Education initiative.

The grand finale of the competition, which had six schools as finalists, was held on Saturday, at the Banquet Hall, Ilorin.

The schools are Queen Elizabeth Secondary School; Government Day Secondary School (GDSS), Airport and Senior Secondary School, AnsaruI Islam.

Others are Senior Secondary School, Olokuta, Senior Secondary School, Ero-Omo and Senior Secondary School, Ita-Alamu, all in Ilorin.

QESS emerged winner of the competition with 30 points while GDDS, Airport came second with 28 points and the third position was clinched by Senior Secondary School, Ita-Alamu with 26points.

Senior Secondary School, Olokuta, Senior Secondary School Alanamu and Senior Secondary School, Ero- Omo came 4th, 5th and 6th respectively.

No fewer than 69 schools from across Kwara Central Senatorial District entered for the competition, which commenced with the preliminary stage on 17th of November, 2018.

The semi-final of the competition was held on 24th of November, 2018, from where the six finalists emerged.

In her address, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Bilikisu Oniyangi, explained that the quiz competition is designed to promote scholarship among students.

She added that the initiative is an effort by the present administration to improve quality education in the state, especially at the basic level.

Oniyangi, therefore, called on stakeholders to partner government for development of education through endowment, building of facilities, scholarship and sponsorship of programmes among others.

The Commissioner, who revealed that the Yattiyr Initiative is the brainchild of university undergraduates, commended them for contributing their quota towards attainment of qualitative education in the state.

Earlier in his speech, the Convener of the Yattiyr Initiative, Fatoye Olusegun John said the NGO is aimed at ensuring that indigent children get access to quality education and scholarship so as to fulfil their educational goals.

He explained that the competition was borne out of concern over mass failure of students in public schools in external examinations.

Fatoye further said that the NGO will continue to collaborate with education stakeholders to achieve its set goals and objectives for the education sector in the state.

Present at the event, were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Hajia Mariam Garba, Directors in the ministry, representatives of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), school principals and teachers among others.
