Sacrament: Ilorin Catholic Bishop confirms 140

By Matthew Denis

The Coadjutor Bishop of Ilorin Catholic Diocese, Most Rev Paul Olawoore has administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 140 candidates on Pentecost Sunday.
The word ‘Pentecost’ is Greek and it means ’50th day’ after Easter Sunday, in which the church celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers to mark the beginning of their earthly ministry of making disciples of all nations.
Recall that Olawoore was ordained Coadjutor Bishop of Ilorin Diocese by Pope Francis last year June.
The event took place during the mass held at Saint Joseph Catholic Cathedral, Ilorin.
The Bishop during sermon said “When Jesus appeared to the apostles in the upper room, he greeted them with peace and promised them the Advocate to strengthen their work.
“Jesus breathed into them and gave them power to go out and preach to all nations saying ‘ receive the holy spirit, those whose sin you forgive they are forgiven and those whose sin you retain they are retained.’
Olawoore went further to read from the Bible verse concerning the gifts of the Holy Spirit, “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
He asked the candidates to meditate and ask themselves what gifts did they have and what they use it for? adding that he gifts should be used for the goodness and benefits of the society.
“It paramount for us to use our gifts and services for the common good of the society and not as burden to the people. So that God the giver of such gifts will be happy with us.”
The Bishop tasked those that were confirmed to be very active in church activities and live exemplary lives as children of God to stand for the truth and preach the word of God without fear.
