The exploits of the Senate President, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki since coming on board in 2015 has been very impressive and many of his critics most times have even wondered how he has been able to achieve progress despite the daunting political challenges that have been instigated against him.
Last week, the leadership of the Saraki-led senate entered the history books when it blazed the trail with the passage of 2003 bills, an unprecedented feat in the country’s legislature. The bills which included the much desired but long abandoned Petroleum Industry bill meant to unbundle the petroleum sector for better revenue accountability and treatment of the host communities plus some constitutional alteration bills have come with extra-ordinary focus, firm leadership and great tenacity by the charismatic and cosmopolitan leader. With the feat, the 8th Senate surpassed previous records in the numbers of bills passed by previous legislatures since the country returned to democracy in 1999. While the 5th Senate (2003 to 2007) passed 129 Bills in all; the 6th Senate (2007 to 2011) passed 72 Bills and the 7th Senate (2011 to 2015) had a total of 129 Bills respectively. Following the remarkable narrative, many political players, especially Saraki apologists have used the situation to underscore his political sagacity and leadership savvy even in the midst of seeming daunting challenges.
According to Saraki who commented on the achievements penultimate Thursday in a tweet through his personal handle (@Bukolasaraki), his colleagues in the upper chamber must take the bulk of the credit for their support and hard work that allowed the Upper Legislative Chamber to reach the milestone.
”As of today, the Senate has passed 201 Bills. We still have 15 months to go, yet, we have reached this milestone. I would like to thank my Distinguished Colleagues for their hard work and cooperation over the last 33 months”, he added.
