Starvation, frustration led me to hijack helper’s car with baby – Kwara Poly graduate

A 29-year-old suspect, Oladapo Olawoye, has said that starvation and frustration led him to hijack car with a baby from a helper, Mrs Omotoyosi Adewoye.

Adewoye, a Magistrate at Shao Magistrate Court, Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State offered Olawoye a ‘lift’ from the church but the latter forcefully hijacked the car with 17-month-old Okikiola, a baby the woman was blessed with six years after her marriage, at the back seat, last Thursday.

According to the suspect, for three days, he had no meal to eat, a situation which led him to snatch a Hyundai saloon car with registration number Lagos EPE 168 CF.

Olawoye, a graduate of Building Technology, Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, during an interview at the police headquarters in the state capital, yesterday, said the unsuspecting woman offered to help him to his destination in her car from Winners Chapel, Offa Garage, Ilorin.  According to him, he never attempted to hijack the car and the baby but the purse and its contents.

“After she offered to help me in her car, I entered and while we were going, I removed a knife to scare her and she jumped out of the car.

“She started shouting as I drove the car away. Initially my aim was not to steal anybody’s car but out of frustration, I needed something to eat that particular day because I had no meal for about three days.

“While driving, I discovered a baby at the back seat of the car and I remembered that police officers normally search vehicles along the way, so I decided to drop the bay beside a house at Akerebiata area before zooming off.

“I then headed home to freshen up but by the time I came out of the house, I saw men of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad and that was how I was arrested.”

Olawoye, who hails from Osun State, however said he regretted his actions while also seeking for forgiveness from the victim.

“I know I can’t escape the law but I seek forgiveness from the woman for what I have done to her,” the suspect who claimed he is a contractor with Stand Right Nigeria Limited, said.

Speaking during the parade of Olawoye and others at the police headquarters, Ilorin, the Commissioner of Police, Lawan Ado, said one Omotoyosi Adewoye of Gaa – Akanbi area reported at ‘A Division’ police station last Thursday adding that the suspect and the victim attended Living Faith Church, Offa Garage with the former who claimed to be stranded requesting for ride from the woman.

“On getting to his destination, he was asked to alight, only for the suspect to remove knife, threatened to kill the woman if she didn’t handover her car keys.

” He succeeded in snatching the car, hand bag containing money, Samsung Galaxy phone, ATM cards and other valuables while a 17- month old son, Okikiola Adewoye who was sleeping when driven away by the suspected robber,” the CP stated.

On the receipt of the report, Ado directed all exit and entry points to the state to be blocked and all patrol teams were alerted a situation the CP claimed led the suspect to abandon the baby at Akerebiata area of Ilorin while Olawoye and the vehicle were later traced and found at Aiyetoro area of Asa-Dam in Ilorin.

“The suspect will soon be charged to court,” the Commissioner of Police added.

In a related development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi, stated that some suspected cultists and others will be paraded next Thursday.

It would be recalled that this medium reported that the police command will soon parade some suspected cultists arrested in connection with recent gruesome killings and bloody clashes in the state.
