‘State governments flouting mining laws in Nigeria’

 

The General Secretary of Miners of Nigeria, Dele Ayanleke has raised concerns over challenges hindering mining in the country.
Speaking at a one- day capacity building workshop organised for Gold Miners by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) held in Ilorin on Tuesday, he blamed the problem on state governments.
According to him, states flout mining laws, calling on both state and local governments to allow mining activities to thrive in their localities.
“This situation is hampering the growth of mining activities and encouraging exportation in the country.
However, other speakers at the event,  called on the  federal and state governments  to intervene in the legal issues impeding exploration of gold in the country.
Speaking on the theme ‘How to find solution to challenges being confronted by Gold Miners in the country’ to export the products, the Executive Director of NEPC,  Olusegun  Awolowo noted that Nigeria is  rich in  mineral resources.
Represented by the Deputy Director, Mr. Samuel Oyeyipo, he decried the fact that the country is not among the ten exporters of gold in the continent, adding that the country has about 34 mineral deposits.
In his address, former Special Assistant to Kwara State Governor on Youths Empowerment, Alhaji Zakariyyau Babatunde said the export of mineral resources in each state should be dictated by respective governments.
He called on the government at all levels to ensure that unemployed youths key into extraction of mineral resources as the country could no longer rely on oil revenue.
