Veteran journalist cautions colleagues against sharp practices

 

A Veteran Journalist, Mr. Kunle-Akogun has cautioned media practitioners against sharp practices and unprofessional conduct that could dent the image of their profession.

Akogun, a former Editor with This Day Newspaper, gave the charge at the weekend while fielding questions on a Radio Kwara Personality Interview Programme “Playing Host”.

The veteran journalist, who raised alarm over the proliferation of quacks in the profession, stressed the need for Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) to check-mate the activities of quacks and impersonation in the pen profession.

Akogun, who is the Director Information, University of Ilorin, charged Nigerian Journalists not to be lap-dogs but watchdogs by beaming their searchlight to unravel hidden secrets and strengthening the democracy of the country.

He described journalism as a laudable profession, pointing out that Nigerian Journalists contributed efficiently to the realisation and return to democratic rule in the country.

According to him, during the military era, journalists also played pivotal roles by ensuring sanctity to human lives, respect to the dignity and the rights of the people.

He however, stressed the need for the Media professionals to adhere strictly to the ethics of profession and charged the regulatory bodies and the Union to always protect their dignity.
