Yoruba Road traders lament poor infrastructure

 

Traders of Yoruba Road market in Ilorin, Kwara State, have decried the pothole ridden road in the market.
They said the deplorable state of rhe road has made vehicular movement difficult within the market.
The traders, who spoke to Pilot Business on Tuesday, implored the state government to ensure immediate rehabilitation of the road.
They also requested for installation of streetlights and parking lot to make vehicular movement less arduous.
The Secretary of the market, Mr. Odetunde Ojetunde said traders have been losing customers owing to the state of the road.
“People  patronising us have been complaining for years now that the road leading to the market is in very bad shape.
” There is no space for cars to park and that is discouraging people from patronising us. We believe that if the state government can assist in these areas there will be more patronage.
“The state government will benefit if our customer base increases because we have a large population of traders, which means more revenue for the state government,” he added.
A trader, Mrs. Funke Salau stated that as an enlite people’s market, customers constantly decry the deplorable state of the road and poor infrastructure.
“Our customers complain to us that the market is not standard enough in terms of infrastructure. They also lament that the bad road most times cause damages to their cars.”
Also, Hajia Blikisu Olarewaju called on the state government to capture the market in its ongoing streetlights project for security and longer hours of operation.
She said, “Most of our customers are elites. They lament that the market doesn’t have streetlights therefore patronising the market at night could be risky,” she further said.
One of the customers, Mrs. Damilola Halimat Yusuf called on the state government to create a mini park for customers and traders.
The Iya-Oloja of the market, Hajia Ajide Abdulrasaq appealed to the state government to address the problems confronting the market, promising that they will continue to play their part through tax payment.
When contacted over the issue, the state Commissioner for Works and Transport, Alhaji Aro Yahaya said the road would soon be rehabilitated.
He said, “The road is captured among the ongoing road rehabilitation projects within Ilorin metropolis. I want to assure the traders that the issue of potholes will soon be a thing of past in the market.”
