‘Zakat potent weapon to fight recession’

Zakat and alms giving have been identified as two potent weapons states and the nation at large must practice to get out of the present economic crisis.

The Chief Imam of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Dr Kamaldeen Al-Mubarak said the Islamic models which have been tested, trusted and documented in world history books with the capability to eradicate poverty and recession should be domesticated across the country.

He said this on Friday, while delivering a lecture titled; “Economic Recession: Islamic Solutions” at the ongoing 7th National Conference of Badrud-Dinil Islamiy Assalat Circle of Nigeria, holding at the Ojoku Town Hall, Ojoku, Oyun Local Government Area of the state.

He blamed successive governments for not harnessing the abundant minerals deposit in the country to reinvigorate the nation’s economy adding that despite being sufficiently blessed with about 32 mineral resources, majority of the people are languishing in poverty.

According to him, bribery and corruption in all spheres of the country’s sectors, among others have aggravated the economic situation in the country.

Al-Mubarak who noted that the country had earlier witnessed austerity period during the Ibrahim Babangida regime, but later overcome it, said if the government can imbibe Islamic solutions to economic crisis, the lost glory of the economy would be restored.

He charged government to create massive employment and encouraged the people to give alms to the needy.

Earlier, the National Amirah of the association, Alhaja Aishat Funsho-Raji in her welcome address disclosed that the Assalat Circle is an affiliate member of FOMWAN adding that it started activities in Kaduna in 1990 with branches in Ilorin, Ibadan, Lagos, Bida and Ojoku.

According to her, the theme of the conference was selected as part of the practice of the Assalat Circle to uphold the banner of Islam in proffering solutions to current societal challenges and promote Islamic culture to contribute positively to the betterment of the larger society.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion and retired Permanent Secretary in the state, Alhaji Lamidi Alabi, said the theme of the conference is apt and timely especially at this critical period that the country is facing different challenges.

The Olojoku of Ojoku, Oba AbdulRasaq Adegboyega while speaking with newsmen at his palace pledged to provide a free land for the organisation in his community.
