KWIRS splashes N3.3m on victorious Kwara athletes

The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) on Friday splashed the sum of N3.3million on twelve Kwara medalists in the 19th edition of the National Sports Festival held in Abuja in December, last year.
At the event held at Revenue House, Ilorin, the Executive Chairman, Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, Professor Muritala Awodun said the gesture was in fulfillment of the promise made for the athletes in the build up to the game.
Professor Awodun who was represented by the KWIRS Director of Administration, Mrs. Adenike Babajamu explained that the gesture was part of the Community Impact projects of the service to empower the youths.
According to him, the service has intervened in a number of projects as part of its own corporate social responsibility.
The KWIRS Chairman commended the athletes for doing the state proud in the last National Sports Festival
He hoped that the incentive would spur the athletes to nurture and develop the talent in them to stardom.
Professor Awodun who expressed concern over continuous lost of Kwara athletes to other states charged the Sports Council to look at other avenue to secure support for the athletes in order to retain them.
In his remarks, the he Kwara State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Alhaji Muideen Alalade thanked the management of KWIRS for the quick intervention in supporting the state’s athletes to the last National Sports Festival in Abuja.
He noted that the incentive would motivate the athletes to win more laurels for the state.
Alhaji Alalade charged the KWIRS to channel more of its Community Impact Projects for sport development in the state.
Speaking earlier, the Director of Sports, Kwara State Sports Council, Coach Tunde Kazeem had recalled the intervention the Chairman of KWIRS in the build up to the last National Sports Festival, commending him for the provision to kits to all athletes and monetary rewards for the medalists.
He said the state is blessed with athletes who could win more laurels if supported.
The Director announced that three of the state table tennis players are currently in Ghana representing Nigeria in a continental engagement while three other Badminton players are in Port Harcourt for similar continental engagement.
Coach Kazeem called on the state government to employ the athletes and give the stipends to encourage them to remain in the state.
Speaking on behalf of the athletes, a gold medalist, Taiye Oyinloye thanked the management of KWIRS for fulfilling its promise and assured the sports stakeholders that the athletes would continue to make the state proud.
