Islamic cleric nabbed over alleged N17m scam in Ilorin

A 42-year-old Islamic cleric, Mohammed Mohammed has been arrested in Ilorin by men of Kwara State Police Command over an alleged N17m scam.

The suspect was nabbed on 5th of September, 2018 following a complaint lodged to the police by one Abdulkareem Abiodun of 78, Salami Zubairu Street, Ilorin.

It was gathered that the suspect had approached the victim for business partnership on a purported Federal Government contract and consequently swindled him of the said sum of money.

According to a police source, โ€œThe Islamic cleric, who claimed to be a travel agent for hajj pilgrims, told Abdulkareem that he had just secured a Federal Government contract that had to do with the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in the northern part of the country.

โ€œMohammed requested that the victim should join him in executing the contract and so he collected money to the tune of N17m from him.

“After the case was reported at the state Police Headquarters, Ilorin, the cleric’s phone was tracked and he was traced to his hideout, where he was arrested.

โ€œFollowing his arrest, many people who had fallen prey of the suspect’s fraudulent acts stormed the police headquarters and identified him as the one who duped them of various sums of money,” the source added.

It was further gathered that the Islamic cleric confessed to the crime, while police investigation revealed that he is a notorious fraudster operating in Ilorin and beyond.

When contacted on the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ajayi Okasanmi said he is yet to be informed on the issue.
