Two persons suspected to be political thugs were on Tuesday remanded in prison custody for allegedly causing mayhem during the last general elections in Kwara State.
The suspects: Abdulrasheed Ishiaq and Shehu AbdulGaniyu were charged for criminal conspiracy and disorderly conduct at election contrary to sections 97 of penal code law and section 128 of the electoral act 2010.
The Police First Information Report (FIR) revealed that the accused persons were arrested following the complaints of the INEC official at Adabata Community Primary School, Ilorin.
The Police report added that the political thugs were allegedly causing problem at a polling unit in the area.
Upon their arrest and search, twenty-six (26) wraps of dried weeds suspected to be India hemp were recovered from the suspects.
Police investigation into the matter also revealed that the said political thugs were in possession of the weeds with the view to sell them to the miscreants within the polling unit during the election.
Investigation further added that the accused persons’ mission is to get whoever buys the weed intoxicated thereby distorting the peace of the electoral process.
The prosecutor, Abidemi Abideen requested that the court to remand the accused persons in prison custody saying investigations into their matter is still ongoing.
He maintained that releasing the accused persons on bail will jeopardise police investigation which is still ongoing.
The accused persons counsel, Barr. Taiwo Ibrahim Olojoku urged the court to discountenace the submission of the prosecutor.
He noted that the accused persons are still presumed innocent until proven otherwise saying they should be allowed to enjoy their fundamental human rights.
He submitted further that deniance of bail should not be used as pretrial for the accused person.
Magistrate Kikelomo Abu who ceded to the submission of the prosecutor, remanded the accused persons in prison custody while the matter was adjourned to 9th April, 2019.

The Magistrate court sitting in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital has granted one Musa Usman, Imam Nasirudeen, Musa Yusuf, Imam Musa Basiru and Husseni Suleiman bail over alledged disruption of election process last Saturday.
The police First Information Report (FIR) revealed that the case was transferred from Divisional Police headquarters Bode Saadu to the State Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) Ilorin for further investigation.
The FIR further revealed that on 9th March, 2019 during the process of the Governorship and the State House of Assembly election at Sheri polling Unit, Bode Saadu that Musa organised thugs to beat up electorates with cuttlass, knives, sticks and other dangerous weapons.
Following this dastard act, a team of detectives moved into the scene where Usman, Nasirudeen, Yusuf, Basiru were arrested while Suleiman was also arrested the following day.
They were dragged before Magistrate Ahmed Ibrahim for criminal conspiracy, causing grevious hurt and disorderly conduct during the election contrary to section 97,248, of penal code law and section 128 of Electoral Act 2010.
The prosecutor, Yusuf Nasirudeen prayed the court to use his discretion judiciously on the issue of bail saying the accused persons are still presumed innocent of the matter.
The counsel, Adisa Abdulraheem, prayed the court to grant the accused persons bail stressing that they will fulfil all bail conditions.
In his rulling, Magistrate Ibrahim granted the accused persons bail, in the sum of N50,000 while the case was adjourned to 28th March, 2019.
