Police grills Babangida’s spokesman, Afegbua over statement on Buhari

Kassim Afegbua, the spokesperson of former military president, Ibrahim Babangida was yesterday interrogated by the Nigeria Police Force at its headquarters in Abuja.
Afegbua was declared wanted over a letter he issued on President Muhammadu Buhari on behalf of his principal.
Police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood had accused Afegbua of ‘making false statement, injurious falsehood, defamation of character and for act capable of inciting public disturbance throughoutย the country.โ
The police after meeting with the former military president’s spokesman however tendered apology for earlier declaring him wanted.
Moshood, who also on Tuesday described the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, as a โdrowning manโ, said the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, declared Afegbua wanted in connection with the statement he issued on behalf of Babangida on Sunday.
The statement had asked President Muhammadu Buhari to quit the political scene in 2019 for a younger element to run the country.
A contrary statement came a few hours later, which Babangida has since denounced.
On Wednesday when Afegbua stormed the Force headquarters with his lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, he was told by the Commissioner of Police in charge of the IGP Monitoring Team and Moshood that the Force goofed by declaring him wanted.
Afegbua was informed that all that the police wanted to achieve was to find out why there were two different statements in the name of Babangida in one day.
The two officers told Afegbua and Ajulo, that the police had since been able to establish the truth of the matter.
When asked if the case already instituted against Idris, Moshood, the Police Force and two others would be withdrawn, he said: โThis is about counsel/client’s communication. We’ll return to my office, sit with my client to appraise the situation and the needful shall be done.โ
