John Shagaya, former Plateau Senator dies in auto crash

A former senator representing Plateau south, John Shagaya, is dead.
A member of his family confirmed his death to newsmen yesterday.
Shagaya, reportedly died following a motor accident that occurred while he was on his way to Langtang, Plateau State.
He was recently appointed the chairman National Institute for Policy and Strategy Studies (NIPSS) by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he is โprofoundly saddenedโ to learn of the tragic accident that took the life of Shagaya.
Buhari, in a statement yesterday by his spokesperson, Femi Adesina, also offered his โheartfelt condolences to the Shagaya family, friends, the Government and people of Plateau State on the painful passing of their illustrious sonโ.
The president paid tribute to the great Nigerian whose legacies, he said, will live on in the patriotic work he did as a military officer, who rose to the position of a General, and a senator representing Plateau South.
In his reaction, a former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida, said he โreceived with great shock the sudden demise of one of the brilliant retired military officers.โ
โGeneral Shagaya until his death had been an ardent supporter of the unity of Nigeria as a nation and a peace builder irrespective of ethnicism, tribalism and religious bigotry,โ Babangida said.
Born in Langtang North, on September 2, 1942, Mr. Shagaya served as minister of Internal Affairs under Mr. Babangida, and represented Plateau South in the senate from 2007-2011.
Until his demise, he was a chieftain of the APC in Plateau State.
